Issues : Authentic corrections of FE

b. 1

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

in FC (→GE)

legato in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

It is difficult to say how the difference in the indications at the beginning of the piece occurred. As legato was not being removed in FC, it was probably added by Chopin in the stage of proofreading FE or to the basis thereof. One of these scenarios presented an opportunity for a possible removal of , which in FC seems to have been written in Fontana's hand. Due to the above, in the main text we suggest it in a variant form (in brackets). See also bars 13 and 33.

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

in FC (→GE)

No indication in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

As in bar 1, the  indication does not seem to have been added to FC by Chopin, which means that it could have been removed in the stage of proofreading FE or in the basis thereof. Not having certainty as to the chronology of the versions, in the main text we suggest a variant solution.

Notation in FC

FE (→EE)

..

Crotchets at the beginning of the bar probably resulted from a correction in print, most probably from the FC version. The latter is, however, misleading – one can get the impression that the bar includes 5 crotchets. The two-part writing specifying the rhythm was introduced in GE. The simplified rhythmic notation is accompanied in FE with the pedalling (see the note below), which, consequently, produces a very similar sound effect to the FC version. It proves that Chopin either changed the rhythm notation himself or accepted it through the addition of pedalling. Due to the above, we provide this version in the main text, simpler in terms of notation and more pianistically natural.

b. 31-32

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

No markings in FC (→GE)

    in FE (→EE)

In the main text we give the pedalling added most probably by Chopin in the stage of proofreading FE (→EE) – see the note above.

New slur in FC (→GE)

Continued slur in FE (→EE)

..

It is difficult to say which version of slurring is later – Chopin could have separated the initial continuous slur while correcting [A] before handing it over to the copyist; however, the slightly undulating shape of the slur in FE could be indicating that the slurs were being combined in the proofreading of this edition. A possible correction is also supported by likely corrections in the two previous bars (rhythm and pedalling). Taking into account the above, in the main text we give the FE version, regarding the FC slurs, indicating the beginning of a new theme, as equal.
